So I don’t really know what this show was, I didn’t care, I had to install a thing for Amazon in San Jose and then I saw the autonomous or remote vehicle area. So as a race fan, seeing this driverless race car, I was pretty disgusted with these tech people. There was a truck, I don’t know it’s intended purpose but there was no place for a driver. Oh and a sticker I had made for my tool box with a Z like mine on it, bonus picture, I’m sure you are pleased.

I’m trying to see the point of a driverless race car. The only thing I can see is if it’s remotely driven. But then it’s not a sport. Just a video game.

A freight truck with no driver makes a lot of sense, no cab means more cargo space.
But a driverless race car kinda of defeats the perpose. Then again it could be kind of cool, but would really just be a place for companies to show off hardwear tech, or driver AI softwear. You loose the “This driver is amazing” aspect, and probably see less exciting crashes but I can see a case for it.

They’re supposed to be running as the support series for Formula-E some time in the future (next year maybe). Yeah it’s a full AI setup meaning there are no humans in the loop at all. As an engineer it’s going to be fascinating to watch the development of these things early on (especially when they fuck up) and it is definitely one of those things where companies can claim that racing will improve their road vehicle technology. There’s also the appeal to see what race cars can do without the limits we artificially impose on them to keep the drivers safe.
Long term however I find it hard to see much rooting interest or drama once it matures and it’s just like watching a bunch of video game AIs playing against each other...
That said to “teach” these things you have to input a ton of race data. What if you taught one using Senna’s historic telemetry then faced it off against the telemetry Lewis Hamilton or some other famous racers.

Purple a chance to flex new tech. Not hard ware and software.

I suppose the wrecks would even be more fun to watch with pout having to worry about the driver. I just don’t want see it replace real racing.

Hard to see how when there’s no human interest element at all.
“You’re watching live as Nigel frantically works to correct the logic that caused the #19 SharePoint car to skip up over the chicane curb during qualifying and cost them 0.03 of a second off the time of their main rival the #69 of team salesforce. Let me tell you folks that debugging C++ doesn’t get any more thrilling than this....”
